Leadership from Animals

I’ve always loved being around animals. Dogs and hamsters have always been close to my heart. In fact, somewhere I think my family has adopted all the street dogs in our area. All the time that I’ve spent with them has made me realise that there is so much about life and leadership that we humans can actually learn from animals. Animals never preach, they practice their leadership and show the way to people.

1) Do not give up till it’s done :
Have you ever seen a dog that wants something really bad? A toy, a treat? Anything? If you have, you would know that they would do anything in their power to get to that thing and not give up till they finally reach it. They would find every way that there is, from making those puppy eyes to downright emotional blackmail and guilt trips till they have their way. And then they do (have their way).

For us too, winning is done the exact same way. If you want something, if you really need something bad enough, you do not let go till you find that way that gets you where you want to reach. Like the famous saying goes, ” If you want something bad enough, you find a way, else you find an excuse.” Trust me, I’ve never seen an animal find an excuse.

2) When you fall, get back up, dust it off :
I’ve had hamsters from quite some time now and to think of what all we can actually learn from such tiny beings. I’ve seen them try to learn new things, like getting into a new corner or building a new nest. I’ve also seen them fail at all these things when they first try them, but I’ve never seen them take that failure hard and not get back up. They have failed and always found a way to make things work for them. For them, failure is just a way something couldn’t be done.

Like in the movie Rocky Balboa, Rocky says “It ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard ya get hit and keep moving forward.” Animals just have a natural way into not taking failures hard and standing back on their feet.

3) Let go and move on :
One of my friend’s pet cat gave birth to a really adorable litter of kittens. The mother was extremely attached to them and as they grew, she taught them new tricks. Unfortunately, one day, in the absence of the mother, the litter was attacked by a pack of dogs and killed. It shattered the mother, she didn’t eat, she didn’t move and it looked like she wouldn’t survive this. However, in a few days she bounced back and learnt to live like before. She knew she had to let the past go and move on with new things in life, that was how survival was done.

How many people have you seen or how many times have you yourself been in a situation where something keeps pulling you back and you let yourself be held back? Make a decision today, unhook yourself from that anchor and let that ship go. In the animal kingdom, the only way you survive is to move on.

Change to GROW!

Why is change in one’s environment important for growth?
Everybody knows that the only thing constant in our lives is quite ironically change. Change can
vary from something as simple as taking a new route to your office due to a road block or a
drastic change such as moving to another city altogether. And every time you go through a
change, be it small or a life altering one… there is always scope for growth. What converts this
scope into actual growth is one’s perspective about change!

While some people thrive due to change, others crumble. And what sets them apart is their
perspective on change. Now what influences one’s perspective on change? According to a
study conducted by scientists, it is extremely vital for a student to shift his/her seat in class on a
day to day basis. This enables the student to have a different take on the same subject which
makes it easier for them to analyze the different angles in play by looking at it from a different
angle(Quite literally).

Now you must be wondering how a change in one’s physical position can alter his/her
psychological position? This is because according to the same study conducted; the brain, body
and mind are part of the same cybernetic structure. Which means when there’s a change made
in one, there’s automatically a change in the others.

To put things into perspective… When a young girl finds a caterpillar inside a classroom, it is
easy for her to look at it as a creepy crawler and cringe. But when she finds the same caterpillar
on a trek in the forest, the creepy caterpillar suddenly turns into the creature that’s one day
going to be a beautiful butterfly! Now did the caterpillar change? Of course not. But there was a
change in her perspective about the caterpillar due to a change in her environment.

A lot of people want to grow as professionals, leaders and human beings but aren’t able to for a
long time. What they don’t understand is that growth requires an environment that fosters it.
That nurtures it. And the faster that they change their environment, the faster can they access
this growth available to them. As an adventure Coach I know this because a lot of participants
that have come for my camps have taken back a lot of growth and learnings due to a change in
their environment. Sometimes they take back the same learning that their parents/boss/friends
had repeatedly spoken to them about earlier. But the realisation about the same only came to
them after they came for camp, I.e, when there was a change in the environment.

So you must remember that growth requires consistent change in your environment that fosters
and nurtures it. So don’t be afraid to go through change…

It’s Important to Evolve!

Right from the natural law of evolution, nature herself has set up such procedures where one has to evolve for a better thing to happen. Imagine what if apes didn’t evolve…. We wouldn’t be here today! In this context, when it comes to one’s growth, what one needs to know is that it is important to evolve and adapt into your environment. When I say evolve, I mean that it is important to acknowledge and also be flexible enough to settle into the change.
Ludvig Van Beethoven, wouldn’t have been able to cope with his hearing disorder if he hadn’t evolved and adapted his life to it; and since he did, he was able to produce results that no one had ever thought of, he turned out to compose few of the greatest of symphonies that the world would ever hear and all of this – when he was completely deaf!
This is only one of such great stories where people have been able to show their true leadership and all they had to do was evolve and adapt. The situation might not really be under one’s control but your mindset sure is and this ability to evolve and adapt comes from the mindset that is under your control.
Stephan Hawking, Team Hoit, the Paralympics’ winners, they have been able to achieve success only because of their will and ability to evolve out of their special abilities, and have reached to their fullest potential.
Let’s take actors for example, would they have been able to reach the success that they have if they didn’t evolve and adapt to the different roles and characters they’ve had to play. Imagine an actor doing the same sort of role in every film? Would he/she be able to win hearts and do great work?
In a world where the business environment, the definitions of competition, the markets, the demographics, thought processes and many more factors are continuously shifting, it is important to evolve to thrive in any situation. As the age old saying goes “Trees that bend to the force of the storm don’t break.”

Change in Leadership

I have been associated with the industry of training and coaching for almost a decade now and have helped thousands of individuals transform the way they achieve results. I have found that there is one thing which most of the clients that I have worked with look for.

A lot of them want progress, a lot of them want growth, while a lot others want development. If you realize – all these things mentioned above boil down to just one thing – CHANGE! Everybody wants change. A caterpillar transforming to a butterfly is change, a sapling growing into a tree is change, moving from one challenge to another is change. In leadership, change and facilitating change is what makes success happen.

You cannot afford to be the same person you were last year because if you have not changed, you have not grown. Now change can either just happen or can be facilitated. Most changes that just happen leave you flabbergasted simply because you were not prepared for it. And in leadership, if you are not prepared for change then you will never be able to use that change as an opportunity to grow. When you decide to facilitate change, you are not only prepared for it but in control of it. You then are in complete control of harnessing the power of change. So decide what changes do you want within and around you in 2016. Even if your 2015 was great your 2016 must not be the same, it deserves to be much better. And to make it better, the best thing you can do is to be absolutely clear about the changes you want, stop waiting for it and step up to facilitate it.
